Indianapolis Cultural Trail - Trail Talk

More Cool Bus Shelters!

We are proud to announce that four more eco-friendly bus shelters custom-designed by the Indianapolis-based architect Donna Sink will be fabricated and installed along the Cultural Trail. Each shelter design will feature a poem written by a published poet who has ties to Indiana. Initially three shelters along Virginia Avenue comprised the Moving Forward project. This brings the total number of new transit shelters being provided by the construction of the Trail to seven. GO INDYGO! GO ART & DESIGN!

The four additional shelters and poems will be installed at the following locations:

  • Washington St. just west of Illinois St. featuring Circle, Chorus by Mitchell L.H. Douglas

  • Washington St. outside the Eiteljorg & State Museums featuring Settlement by Micah Ling

  • Mass. Ave. at Walnut, & Park featuring Art with a Heart by Vienna Wagner

  • Mass. Ave. east of College by the Art Bank featuring Our Street in Endless Circles by Jenny Browne

An Emmy for Peace?

That's right! Together In Peace: The Glick Peace Walk won the Emmy ® in the Historical/Cultural Program or Special category. This Emmy ® was one of 5 wins for WFYI-PBS 20 Indianapolis. The documentary, produced by Kim Jacobs, followed the behind the scenes process of making the Glick Peace walk a reality. This installation is a tribute to those individuals who have made an impact on driving the nation forward through innovation and discovery. The Peace Walk is a part of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail in downtown Indianapolis along Walnut Street between Meridian St. and Capitol Ave. From the artwork to the opening ceremony, Together In Peace might just help you to appreciate this beautiful addition to Indianapolis just a little more, as the viewer is taken on the journey that made it possible.

The program Together in Peace will be re-airing on WFYI HD On-Air Thursday 07/14/2011 5:00am, Sunday 07/31/2011 4:00am, Saturday 08/20/2011 4:00:pm. It will also be available online soon @ wfyi.org

Traffic Restrictions

Southeast Corridor (Virginia Ave.):

  • Virginia Avenue from Pennsylvania to Delaware is currently one-way north
  • Virginia Avenue from Maryland to Louisiana has only one southbound lane, the curb lane is closed.
  • New Jersey Street from Virginia to South is open for two-way traffic, but is pinched due to work at the corners and along the east side of the street.
  • South Street from New Jersey to East has the eastbound curb lane closed.
  • East Street, just south of South Street, has the southbound curb lane closed.
  • Virginia Avenue from the Interstate bridge to Prospect is narrowed to two lanes. It will remain two-way traffic. There are some constrictions on the cross streets at the intersections with Virginia.

Central Corridor (Washington St.):

  • Washington Street from Alabama to Illinois generally has two westbound through lanes, with left turn lanes at some of the intersections.
  • The north-south streets crossing Washington generally have closed curb lanes at the intersections.
  • Scioto Street, the alley entrance to the Symphony, is currently closed.
  • In the next couple of weeks, the portion of Washington Street from Illinois to Capitol will be reduced to two through lanes and a left turn lane.

West Corridor (Blackford St.):

  • Blackford Street is one-way southbound from just south of Indiana Avenue to New York Street. Traffic from Lockefield Gardens can still exit north to Indiana Avenue.
  • Blackford Street from New York to the Central Canal is about to be restricted. It will be one-way southbound to Ohio Street. South of Ohio, it will be a narrowed two-way roadway. Traffic coming north from the museum will have to take Ohio to Blake to return to New York Street.
